Description
Super Bowl XXXIV was matchup between the Tennessee Titans and the St. Louis Rams. The plucky Tennessee Titans had managed to claw their way through the playoffs all the way to the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Rams' overpowering offense had always seemed destined to make it there. As the Music City hoped for another miracle victory, they found themselves holding the Rams' offense at bay through most of the first half, with the Rams only leading 9-0, having only scored field goals. The Rams finally got into the endzone in the third quarter when Kurt Warner fired a bullet to rookie wide receiver Torry Holt in the endzone to go up 16-0. The Titans refused to give up. Over the next several drives they scored 16 unanswered points to tie the game. On the Rams' ensuing drive, Kurt Warner through a 73-yard pass to wide receiver Isaac Bruce, scoring another touchdown, making the lead 23-16, Rams. With plenty of time left on the clock, the Titans' methodically drove downfield, eventually reaching the St. Louis 10 yard line with only six seconds remaining in the game. With one last shot for a Tennessee turnaround, Titans quarterback Steve McNair connected with Kevin Dyson, but Rams linebacker Mike Jones tackled Dyson one yard short of the goal line as time expired. The Rams franchise and the city of St. Louis received their first Super Bowl victory in a game that, at its time, was considered perhaps the most exciting Super Bowl ever.
