Description
Spain booked their spot in the showpiece event by beating tournament hosts Japan 1-0. La Roja were denied a penalty after a VAR review, but neither side really looked like breaking the deadlock in the first 90 minutes, and extra time was needed to find a victor. Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio scored the only goal of the game in the 115th minute. Spain is set for a showdown in the final on Saturday with Brazil, who overcame Mexico in the semifinal. The Brazilian side had more offense in the match between gold medalists of the past two Olympics - Mexico in London 2012 and Brazil in Rio 2016 - and came close to taking the match in their hands in the 81st minute, when forward Richalison's header beat Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa but was denied by the post. The match entered a penalty shoot-out after a goalless 120 minutes. The first two attempts by the Mexicans could not find the net, while the Brazilians were able the shoot-out 4-1. Both Brazil and Spain will be out to win gold medals for the second time in their respective histories, with La Roja having won the 1992 tournament, while the Selecao were triumphant in 2016. The final will take place on Saturday, August 7, at the International Stadium in Yokohama.
