League creation (Biathlon World Cup)

Hello !

I would like to see the Biathlon World Cup here, could an admin create the league in skiing please ?
For reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biathlon_World_Cup

I can populate some years but not everything at once so it will be a process.
Is there a way to bulk add events ? I can do everything by hand but I assume there's a tool to automate some of this task.

Thanks !

New leagues should only be created for users with a good history of contributing to the rest of the site with edits.

That being said, if you want to show your seriousness for the project you can put together a spreadsheet of the events containing the following details: UTC date and time, country, city, venue, event name, round number. Which can then be bulk added to the site.

You can use the Olympics Biathlon (https://www.thesportsdb.com/season.php?l=5139&s=2022) as a style guide for how you name the events.

Yep exactly what is said above.

Happy to add leagues but we need some confidence you will stick around first Many people ask for something then don't come back leaving an empty league.

Yes understandable !
Could I start with the past 5 years, then add the other years in the following weeks ? It's quite a lot of events

I made an exception as you seem interested and keen

Feel free to add events here using the yellow button:

https://www.thesportsdb.com/league/5342

EDIT: I added some test events and players to show you how to name and format them

EDIT2: A lot of players seem to already have been created for the Olympics. They can just edited for the secondary team as IBO men's or Womens.

So ! Thanks a lot zag
I made the following spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11eylNjj9sa2DlYoGyW1LZc2_U7XrllN1hCN5qO-AR2Q/edit?usp=sharing

It contains the basic informations that curswine asked me to fill for the past 5 years to date (so 2018-2019 to 2022-203). For the current season, I did not add the upcoming events because I couldn't find the starting time for each events. I'll do so when they're available.

I'm no expert in this sport, apparently there is a World Championship in the middle of the season that counts for the World Cup's ranking, so I added it as a normal round. There are betwen 6 and 12 events (in an even is a race) per round, that's why I numbered them that way.
I didn't know how to mark the separation between season so everything is in bulk, I hope it's ok.
I didn't add results or anything yet, I think it'll be a lot more easier to add once the events are created.

If it's missing infos or the formatting isn't right please let me know, I'll edit the spreadsheet

Alright so I started adding some events by hand for the current season and got one question: it seems neither the "." or "," are taken into account, transforming "7,5km" in "75hm" which is wrong. How can I escape those special characters ?
In addition, it took me a few events to notice and as I can't edit the names I'm a bit stuck How could I fix that ?
And finally, I addeds an event by mistake since you already added it but didn't see it, how can I delete it ?

Thanks !

Nice findings, seemed like a categorization bug so I fixed it going forward, you can now use . in event names.

Also fixed the existing events and removed the dupe. Thanks for the feedback

Alright thanks zag !
What about the spreadsheet I posted yesterday ? Is it usable or do I have to add everything by hand ?

If you want to add things like like YouTube highlights, tweets, event descriptions then go ahead, I can add those en masse too.

I'll need to do some extra parsing once you've added whatever you like,

I know it sounds picky, but please can you keep the event names in the style of those for the Olympics as I've noticed there are inconsistencies in your spreadsheet.
- Use a period (.) for the decimal places.
- No spaces between the 4 x and the event length.
- No space between the event length and km.
- No apostrophes.
- Use the letter 'x' instead of '×', capitalise every word.

E.G. 4 × 6 km Women's relay becomes 4x6km Womens Relay

No problem curswine, but apparently someone did it before I had a chance
I see that date and time have been separated in two columns, is that easier that way ? Or do I keep "date & time", "date" and "time" columns ?
I also noticed the "round" column, and you found the venue names (couldn't find them on Wikipedia).

Is the formatting now good for adding ? Or any other changes ?
Additionnally, is there somewhere a mini-guide to properly formating that kinf of data ? I may in the future be interested in adding other leagues, that way I'll get it right the first time

Regarding results, highlights and so on, as I said I'm not personnally a fan of the sport so I don't really know where to find all of that (except results obviously), I'm just doing this for a friend using my Plex server so it comes up with infos
I do have one question though: in other leagues (NBA for examples), there seems to be some kind of template to generate an event poster with the teams logo. I assume for biathlon I could do something with the country's flag and the city name, but how could I upload that kind of thing here ? Sorry if this seems obvious, before that I just edited a few details here and there, first time I try something this big

One final thing: for season 2022-2023 there are 2 double events: Mens 10 km Sprint and Mens 12.5 km Pursuit appear twice, if you could remove one of each that'd be great !

Thanks for all your help anyway and Happy New Year !

That was me, I thought I'd copied what you'd added to a new spreadsheet, but I actually edited yours. Sorry about that.

I see that date and time have been separated in two columns, is that easier that way ? Or do I keep "date & time", "date" and "time" columns ?

Yes, the script I've written which bulk adds reads the date and time individually, I find it easier to split on a spreadsheet first than using Python.

I also noticed the "round" column, and you found the venue names (couldn't find them on Wikipedia).

I know nothing about the sport either, but I found the website https://www.biathlonworld.com/calendar to be a good source for further details. If you click on 'Venue Info', and then 'Arena', it shows you the venue name.

Is the formatting now good for adding ? Or any other changes ?

I'll need to add a couple more columns for the script to read first, but it will be able to be added soon.

Additionnally, is there somewhere a mini-guide to properly formating that kinf of data ? I may in the future be interested in adding other leagues, that way I'll get it right the first time

No there is no guides, but I'll create a blank sheet in the Biathlon spreadsheet which can act as a kind of template you can use.

It will be different when it is a sport which has teams though.

Regarding results, highlights and so on, as I said I'm not personnally a fan of the sport so I don't really know where to find all of that (except results obviously), I'm just doing this for a friend using my Plex server so it comes up with infos

If you're able to create a Photoshop .PSD file as a template I can apply the data and produce a graphic for each different event. Or if you want to learn more about it yourself then search for "Photoshop data merge" or "Photoshop variables".

One final thing: for season 2022-2023 there are 2 double events: Mens 10 km Sprint and Mens 12.5 km Pursuit appear twice, if you could remove one of each that'd be great !

I will look into that for you.

Thanks for all your help anyway and Happy New Year !

No problem at all, have a great one yourself.

Alright, everything duly noted No problem editing the spreadsheet directly, it's probably easier that way anyway !

I have one more question regarding the naming of events: is it possible to decide that the city's name should be added at the beginning of an even's name ? It's a bit unconventional I know, but specifically for biathlon as a lot of events are the same but in different cities, it's common to refer to them as "Kontiolahti Mens Sprint", "Hochfilzen Womens relay" and so on.
I didn't think of that before seeing all my files in one folder, and with only the date it's a bit unpractical to understand which round it is if you don't know the shcedule by heart.

Hello there !

curswine I see you edited the spreadsheet to add a few things, do you need something else from me to import it ?
I'd just like to know if I can create the next events or if I should wait

Hi, no nothing else required, I've just been a bit busy, but I will make it priority to add these events this afternoon. My apologies for the delay.

Edit All added.

Thanks a lot ! I'll add the old seasons in the following weeks.
And thanks for the highlights !

Let me know when you do and I'll import them.

I've used some formulas on the spreadsheet to make things a little easier, so be careful when updating those.

Oh I was planning on doing that by hand but it's probably much longer. I'll carefully edit the same spreadsheet and let you know when I'm done
You'll probably want to delet the entire 2017-2018 season as I may have done some typose in the events names I'll do this entire season again in the doc

I'll check them over.

I'm going to remove the "North Korean" ones as there is a separate section for Olympic events, and Pyeongchang is in South Korea.

You've also added an Italian event without an event name, which I don't know how you have done that, haha.

I think I pressed enter before filling the infos
For the North Korean event I got confused indeed because it appears on the calendar, but does not count in the World Cup ranking. What a weird sport !
