Video Highlights Description About 40 million viewers tuned in for the world's first all-electric Grand Prix where an action-packed final-lap collision handed victory to Brazilian driver Lucas di Grassi.
The dramatic ending to the race around Beijing's Olympic Park took in the iconic Bird's Nest stadium and Water Cube will have delighted organiser Formula E, which aims to showcase the best cutting-edge electric car and green energy technology to a new generation of urban consumers.
With millions tuning in across the world, 75,000 people watching live, and about one billion social interactions recorded, Formula E chief Alejandro Agag hailed the inaugural race in the championship as a huge success that heralded a "new era of motorsport."
"Two years ago the FIA had a vision of creating a championship which has close racing, entertainment and sustainability at its heart. This weekend, that vision became a reality," he said.
"To see 20 fully electric cars racing towards the first corner was a very special moment for me and for everyone involved. We truly believe this weekend marks a new era of motorsport that embraces sustainable mobility and we are incredibly grateful to all our investors, teams, drivers, partners, event operators, personnel, and of course the FIA, for helping us make this such a success."
Di Grassi sneaked victory after race-leader Nicolas Prost, son of motor racing legend Alain Prost, and Venturi's Nick Heidfeld touched on the final corner of the final lap in the battle for the lead, sending Heidfeld flying into the barriers. Both drivers walked away unharmed, although not without an argument reminiscent of Formula E's elder cousin Formula One.
The nine-race championship now heads to Putrajaya, Malaysia, on 22 November, then takes in iconic cities such as Miami, Buenos Aires, Monte Carlo and Berlin, before concluding in London's Battersea Park on 27 June next year.
