Video Highlights Description Brands Hatch is a motor racing circuit in West Kingsdown in Kent, England. First used as a grasstrack motorcycle circuit on farmland, it hosted 12 runnings of the British Grand Prix between 1964 and 1986 and currently hosts many British and International racing events. The venue is owned and operated by Jonathan Palmer's MotorSport Vision organisation.
Brands Hatch offers two layout configurations: the shorter "Indy Circuit" layout (1.198 miles) is located entirely within a natural amphitheatre offering spectators views of almost all of the shorter configuration from wherever they watch. The longer "Grand Prix" layout (2.433 miles) played host to Formula One racing, including events such as Jo Siffert's duel with Chris Amon in 1968 and future World Champion Nigel Mansell's first win in 1985.
Circuit Biography
A natural amphitheatre offering unrivalled views of the action from various vantage points, Brands Hatch is known as one of Britain’s best-loved motor racing circuits. Its unique combination of dips, cambers, fearsome corners and hills means it is still one of the world’s most renowned racing venues. The BTCC has been going to Brands Hatch since the series began back in 1958.
Race 1
Factory Honda driver Dan Cammish took his maiden BTCC victory in the opening race of the day at Brands Hatch ahead of his Team Dynamics teammate Matt Neal.
The 29-year-old tacked pole man Brett Smith (Eurotech Honda) over the opening lap and sliced inside his rival coming out of Clearways at the end of the tour to grab the initiative. Cammish becomes the 17th different winner of the 28 races so far this season. Neal had started third but dropped behind Jack Goff (Eurotech Honda) initially, before reasserting himself at Druids on lap four. He set off after Smith and overtook his foe coming out of Paddock Hill Bend at the start of lap nine. Goff caught and pressured Smith over the latter part of the race, but Smith held on to take his first podium finish in the category.
Turkington, who had started 17th, had been battling with Chilton and the pair touched briefly as they fought over 11th spot on lap 10, but Turkington failed to make the move stick. He came home in 12th place, two places in front of Ingram, who had started 19th.
It means Turkington has extended his points advantage to 36 with two races remaining. There are 44 points left to win.
Race 2
Honda Civic racer Dan Cammish took his second victory of the BTCC weekend at Brands Hatch as WSR BMW man Colin Turkington claimed his third title.
Cammish blasted away from pole position and was never headed as he led home teammate Matt Neal in the second 1-2 of the day for the Team Dynamics cars.
Jack Goff had run in second place initially in his Eurotech Racing Honda until it retired with an engine problem, which promoted Neal. He still had to work hard for second place as he was under severe pressure from the WSR BMW of Andrew Jordan.
Over the final few laps, championship challenger Tom Ingram (Speedworks Motorsport Toyota), who had flown through the order in his ballast-free machine to scramble into fourth spot after 10 laps when he overtook Aiden Moffat’s Laser Tools Racing Mercedes.
Fourth place was not going to be enough for Ingram as Turkington was running in 11th place, which was enough for him to claim the crown.
Race 3
Outgoing champion Ash Sutton won the final BTCC race of the season by 0.032s after a dramatic dash to the flag in the reversed grid race.
The Team BMR Subaru racer worked his way into second place after eight laps of the event, and set about slashing the 0.8s advantage that had been built up by the Power Maxed Racing Vauxhall of Josh Cook, who had started on pole position.
The two fought a mighty dual and it looked as if Cook had done enough, but Sutton inched around the outside of his rival as the two cars powered towards the finish line.
Sutton did just enough to take his sixth win of the season to cement fourth place in the standings.
Rob Austin had led the early stages of the event in his HMS Alfa Romeo until Cook managed to unpick his defences into Paddock Hill Bend on lap five.
Sutton deposed Austin two laps later to set off on his charge. Austin, though, managed to hold on to third place.
The BTCC calls into Brands Hatch for both the season-opener on the action-packed Indy circuit as well as the finale which takes place on the majestic Grand Prix circuit. The historic Kent race track has seen some spectacular BTCC entertainment over the many years the championship has been visiting, and has been the scene of many a nail-biting finale.
