Video Highlights Description In March 2015 Thailand became the latest Asian country to play host to WorldSBK™ at the new state-of-the-art Chang International Circuit. The venue was opened in 2014 earning FIM Grade A and FIA Grade 1 classifications, with the owners striving to attract the biggest names in two and four-wheel motorsports.
The historic first WorldSBK™ visit to Thailand in 2015 was totally dominated by Jonathan Rea as he took pole position, a double win and both fastest laps, leading every lap of both races. Since then Thailand has become a permanent fixture on the calendar and is a popular destination amongst riders and fans.
Jonathan Rea has clinched his first victory of 2018 in the opening race in Thailand to slash at Marco Melandri's early points lead. After seeing Melandri dominate to a double victory at the season opener in Australia, reigning World Superbike champion Rea has struck back with a measured victory in Thailand after seeing off an early challenge from pole-sitter Tom Sykes.
With the Kawasaki teammates trading overtakes for the lead in the first two laps, Rea began to stretch ahead of the chasing pack and built a useful time advantage while Sykes went backwards through the order.
Rea maintained a comfortable lead for the remainder of the race to take his first win of the year and cut Melandri’s lead in the championship down to two points.
