Video Highlights Description Stephen Maguire benefitted from a huge slice of good fortune with a fluke at a vital moment as he beat Tian Pengfei 10-9 in the first round of the Betfred World Championship.
Maguire looked certain to lose 10-7 deep in the 17th frame when he needed a snooker on the colours. But he got the snooker on the blue, then went for a risky pot to a baulk corner. He missed his target by several inches, but the blue hit the cue ball again and deflected into the other baulk pocket. He added pink and black to snatch the frame then, almost inevitably, recovered to win 10-9. It was a cruel way to lose for China’s Tian who was making his Crucible debut.
Ding Junhui the 2016 runner-up showed signs of his best form before scrapping his way into round two with a 10-7 win in a high-quality match against Anthony McGill.
Ding led 6-3 overnight and made scores of 99 and 91 for a 9-5 lead only for Scotland's McGill, the world number 24, to battle back to 9-7.
However, an increasingly edgy Ding finished with a stylish 106, one of 15 breaks of more than 50 in the match, to reach the last 16 for the 10th time.
They say good things are worth waiting for. Gary Wilson put that theory to the test on Sunday night, earning a first World Championship victory by taking the decider against Luca Brecel in a 10-9 success - the longest frame in Crucible history. The 19th and last frame of an intriguing match lasted 79 minutes and 31 seconds, beating the previous record by more than three minutes.
Neil Robertson completed a 10-1 destruction of World Championship debutant Michael Georgiou, who avoided becoming only the second player to suffer a Crucible whitewash. Robertson led the first-round tie 9-0 after Saturday's first session but Georgiou scored a brilliant 90 to take Sunday's first frame before bowing out.
Georgiou also narrowly avoided another unwanted place in snooker history, managing to score 197 points and beat the previous lowest Crucible total of 191.
Former champion Shaun Murphy dished out the biggest defeat in Crucible history in a record-equalling 10-0 first-round win over Chinese qualifier Luo Honghao. World number 92 Honghao managed just 89 points, the fewest in a match at the showpiece event in its 43-year history.
Murphy’s 10-0 win included an impressive four century breaks in the opening session, in addition to runs of 76 and 62.
