Derek Kenneth Stepan (born June 18, 1990) is an American professional ice hockey center. He is currently an unrestricted free agent who most recently played under contract with the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL).
He has previously played in the NHL for the New York Rangers, whom drafted Stepan in the second round, 51st overall, in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the Arizona Coyotes, Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes.
On July 1, 2010, he signed his first professional contract with the Rangers, forgoing his junior and senior years at Wisconsin. On October 9, 2010, he became the first player in Rangers history, and the fourth in NHL history, to score a hat-trick in his NHL debut.
