Marcelo Daniel Gallardo (born 18 January 1976) is an Argentine football coach and former professional player, who is currently manager of River Plate. He started his career in the youth divisions of the former and made his debut in the Argentine Primera División at the age of 17 in 1993. After a 6-year spell, in which he won five local league championships, the 1996 Copa Libertadores and the 1997 Supercopa Libertadores, he transferred to France's Ligue 1 AS Monaco FC, where he would be named French League Footballer of the Year in 2000. He also represented Argentina in two FIFA World Cups, with his performance being affected by injuries in both.
During his career as a player, Gallardo played as an attacking midfielder in the role of playmaker. He was regarded for his vision, technique, class, dribbling, and more than anything for his defence splitting passes.
After winning the 2010–11 season of the Uruguayan Primera División with Nacional de Montevideo, Gallardo retired as a player to undertake the team's coaching position. He helped Nacional de Montevideo defend their championship the 2011–2012 season and he transferred to River Plate thereafter. Under his command, River Plate would win local championships and get back to the international scene, where they hadn't won a tournament from 1997 to 2014. Having archieved more international tournament championships than the team in its previous history, he's considered one of the most successful coaches in River Plate's history.
