Formed in 1873, they have won six Championships and one Challenge Cup. Their home ground is the AJ Bell Stadium in Barton-upon-Irwell, Eccles; the club played at the Willows in Weaste from 1901 until 2011. Prior to the 1895-96 season, the club was known simply as Salford, from 1995-98 as Salford Reds and from 1999-2013 as Salford City Reds.
On a 1934 tour to France, the press described the team as playing like devils, hence their nickname.
